Today, we will talk about companies you can teach English online with while living in the UK.
I live and work in the UK and when I first entered the world of online teaching, I naturally came across VIPKid and GoGoKid, two of the top companies, however, you have to be eligible to work in America or Canada to apply for either of these. Therefore, I started researching which companies will hire you if you live and work in the UK.
The top four I came across were iTutorGroup, Education First, DaDa and PalFish.
You all know I work for iTutorGroup part-time and am very happy with my experience there thus far – check out my top five reasons why I enjoy working for this company.
But, I have still explored other companies and opportunities out there, too. I enjoy learning more about the industry and seeing what other companies offer in regards to lesson plans, pay, scheduling, etc. Let’s talk about some key points I learned about each company.
- There is a more thorough application process in which you need to submit a DBS check, but the company will pay for this.
- There is availability to teach from 09:00-13:30 GMT every day.
- Classes are one-to-one.
- The pay is lower compared to other companies.
- The company/the parents want you to build a more long-lasting relationship with the students, therefore, regulars are extremely likely, but, as the teacher you are expected to open consistent slots every week for a long period of time.
- The hiring process seems very straightforward like iTutor (fill out information, have an interview and do a mock lesson).
- There is availability to teach 18:00-21:00 CST.
- Classes are one-to-one.
- The pay is similar to iTutorGroup.
- Classes are 30 minutes in length which means classes can start at odd times to allow breaks in between.
- PalFish is different from other companies in that it is an app, therefore, it works off a smartphone or tablet, and not a computer or laptop.
- Teachers have a ‘social media’ profile in which you can post ‘moments’ and ‘lives’ and interact with students through comments and messages.
- There is availability to teach 18:00-21:00 CST.
- Classes are one-to-one.
- The pay is similar to iTutorGroup.
- It is the teacher’s responsibility to use the social media platform in order to market themselves and attract students.
These are some of the key aspects I have learned while researching other companies. YouTube is a great resource for seeing people’s first-hand experiences working for a company as well as job review websites. There may be other online teaching companies that will hire you if you live and work in the UK, but I have not found any more yet. Many online English companies are still relatively new and, therefore, their rules change very regularly to accommodate a growth in students and/or teachers, etc., so I encourage you to research any company thoroughly before applying.
